Traveling With Four-Legged Kids: Farewell to Our Dog Lucy

Today, because of declining health, we had to euthanize our 14-year-old dog, Lucy. It was the hardest thing my wife, daughter and I have had to do, but we know it was the right thing. She was able to have some dignity at the end of her life.

We will always remember her as a smart, loyal and loving companion. We will especially remember her on the many road trips we took by car.

But on the first trip to LA, she tossed her cookies in the backseat on the Grapevine. A few months later, she got sick on the curvy road to Sea Ranch, 100 miles north of SF. When her car riding skills improved, she took countless trips with us around California to Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Sonoma, Napa, and even Pacific City, Oregon.

We’d like to share a poem entitled “My Dog” that our daughter wrote a few years ago…
My dog’s fur is as soft as silk.
My dog’s eyes are as sweet as maple syrup.
My dog’s fur is as black as the night sky.
My dog’s personality is different at all times.
My dog is unique and she will always be like that.
My dog’s name is Lucy.
She is a Black Labrador Retriever and Beagle mix.
I love Lucy because:
She is kind, she is cute, and she is sweet.
These are all the reasons I love Lucy!

Thanks very much for your comment about Lucy.
As a long-time dog owner, you know that they’re more than a pet… they’re a big part of the family. On some days, they’re better than kids because they don’t talk back, they don’t give you attitude and they definitely don’t push your buttons. They just give you unconditional love 24/7.
    Hope to see you soon.
    Love,
    Gil, Ellen and Sara
