We are now relaunching with a sharper focus: curated, honest guidance on where to stay when the trip matters. Beginning with California wine country, we rate hotels on one standard — who they’re genuinely for, whether they’re worth the premium, and what the OTAs won’t tell you. No hotel pays to appear. No sponsored placements. No “best of” lists assembled from press releases.
The Compass Rating is our tool for this: a structured, factor-based score applied consistently across properties, so you can compare a vineyard inn against a Yountville resort against a Healdsburg boutique hotel and understand exactly what you’re trading off.
The archive
Twenty years of travel writing remains on this site, searchable and readable. It reflects the world as our contributors found it — restaurants that have since closed, hotels that have changed hands, cities that look nothing like they did in 2007. We’ve kept it because provenance matters, and because some of it is still worth reading.
