Sala Silvermine is Certainly a Contender for the World’s Most Unusual B & B :: Sweden

Picture this…A single suite, 155m underground in historic Sala Silvermine, one of the world’s best preserved mine settings. (During its heyday, production amounted to more than 3 tons of silver a year, and a total of more than 400 tons of silver and about 40,000 tons of lead were extracted - completely by hand!) If you wake up in the middle of the night and have to use the bathroom, make sure you turn right or else you’ll end up exploring dark winding galleries, vast caverns and magic lakes.

Suite Details

Your guide will give you the grand underground tour, provide you with refreshments and bring you breakfast the next morning…but other than that, it’s just you and your honey, all alone in the big bad cave. But if you get scared, no worries. You will be given an intercom radio to call the Sala staff, available for you above ground during the whole night.

The underground suite costs 3750 SEK for 2 persons (inc. taxes).
A simple toilet is available about 50m away from the suite. Showers are available in the Sala Bed and Breakfast above ground.

Wow, this is as weird as the ice hotel, but for the right price I might be game. I like the idea of a night of total solitude, plus the option to explore the mines.

How do they manage ventilation and keeping the place climate controlled? Claustrophobics may not venture here for sure.
