To decant or not to decant?

To decant or not to decant?I was looking at some beautiful crystal decanters and wondered …should I get one of these for my collection of wine related implements? Is it any good to pour the wine into a decanter before serving? According to Vins magazine, a decanter is useful in two cases. First, if you have a very young wine and would like to air it so that the tanins get some oxygen. In this case, it is best to decant the wine into your container a few hours before drinking. For a wine that is very old, let’s say 15 years or more, the decanter serves the purpose of separating the wine from the sediment in the bottom of the bottle that collected over the years. Older wines do not take it well when exposed to fresh air suddenly, so it is better to decant them right before consumption.
