Istrian Truffle Days are Here!

While something of a newcomer to the truffle scene, Croatia has been going to great lengths to promote their growing truffle industry. Given that, Truffle Days are now in full swing, in the region of Istria until the end of November. For those unfamiliar with this region, it’s the little triangular wedge of land, forming the far western portion of Croatia. The area was under Italian rule for the last 500 years leading up to the middle of the 20th century, so the architecture, atmosphere, wine, and culinary delights are hail from Italian customs and traditions. In other words, yum, yum, yum.

I’ve tried the truffles of the area and they’re mouth watering. Naturally, it’s just good to not think too much about what they look like. The rest of the food offerings are stellar as well and the wines are top notch. All of this ends up forming two worlds in Istria: the coast and the interior. My preference is the interior where the truffles run rampant near the towns of Buzet, Livade, and Oprtalj. For any other foodies or winos out there, it’s a great new stop if you want to try a different locale in the Mediterranean, but still be able to have similar offerings.

If you’re able to make it there in time for the festivities, you’ll be in for a treat. The Istrian truffles are delicious and quite easily at the same level of taste of those grown elsewhere in the Med. And if accommodation gives you pause, the agrotourism hospitality offerings are excellent. Just remember to bring an empty stomach for the Istrians to fill up with the black little wonder tubers.
