“The Malaysian island of Langkawi is rich in culture, with a history in trade dating back to Persia and India. And new resort, the Four Seasons Langkawi on Tanjung Rhu beach, echoes this heritage.
“Moorish and South Asian influences are evident in the interior, with iron lanterns, sturdy geometrical shapes and dark-hued textiles and carvings – the dramatic, blue concierge desk, right, is particularly impressive. But for us, the high design is at its best in the bathrooms, where Spanish tiling, lovely slabs of marble and fine charcoal-grey stone are put to use in just about every imaginable way of bathing: plunge pools, outdoor rain showers and indoor Turkish baths. The clove-scented local curries are the star dishes at the restaurant and we love the crystal stone massage available at the spa.

When we sailed around the world we stopped at Langkawi, where we were delighted to happen onto a traditional shadow play – wonderful fun, even if you can’t understand the language. Langkawi has an important role in a sailor’s life -it is the cheapest place to top off the spirits cabinet, which might seem ironic since the island is Muslim. We had no trouble getting a drink either, for restaurant owners who served alcohol were protected from prosecution by posting signs on the premises saying that Muslims may not order alcoholic beverages. As far as our stay in Langkawi, it was delightful. I do not even regret that the extent of our luxury was the cabin and galley of our 42′ sloop.
