A Shining Beacon of Quality: Fog City Diner, San Francisco

When I was a 9-5er in SF ad agencies, I worked near Levi Square, the Financial District and North Beach. One of my favorite haunts has always been the Fog City Diner at the corner of The Embarcadero, Lombard and Battery. Plus, last time I was here, Danielle Steel was at the next table. (How’s that for name dropping?) She was wearing a full-length mink coat though it was 60 degrees outside.

With signs that say “Get In Here” and “No Crybabies,” Fog City is a serious place for burgers, fresh fish, salads and great desserts. It boasts an excellent wine list, does a toasty Happy Hour with the work force, and has a gorgeous ambience. Maybe that’s why my friend Angela practically lives here.

From its glowing neon, stainless steel exterior, tuck-and-roll leather and rich mahogony booths, it seems like a 1930s diner. But the service, style and raw bar of shellfish and saltwater delicacies are strictly modern day.

You can choose from small and large plates, their famous “mighty meatloaf” or other taste-tempting dishes. I’ve never had a bad meal here and the ambience is SF class all the way.
