To Have or Have Not? Bringing Foreign Foodstuffs Home
You’ve done it. I’ve done it. Even your parents have done it. Yes, we’ve all carried some kind of foreign food back from a trip — whether it was a melting blueberry cheesecake from Zabar’s in NYC, a can of olives or escargots from southern Europe, square watermelons from Japan, pungent cheese from just about anywhere, or whatever.
There’s a great rule of thumb from Janice Mosher, U.S. Customs and Border Protection: “It it’s runny and gooey, we won’t let it in.”
