Japanese Tapas — Small Plates & Big Tastes :: Sozai Restaurant & Sake Lounge, San Francisco

I was part of the inner circle when I attended the pre-opening party a few weeks ago at Sozai Restaurant and Sake Lounge in my childhood neighborhood, San Francisco’s Sunset District.

With a convenient location at 16th Avenue and Irving Streets near UC Med Center, Sozai is now open. This sake tavern serves small bites of food, including a kushiyaki, sashimi, Edamame hummus with wonton chips, potato croquettes and ginger chocolate cake.

My friend Mari Takahashi is the chef and partner with her husband Gil Payne. The third partner is menu consultant Jennifer Lorenzo. Check it out for great food and a long list of hot and cold sakes, all at reasonable prices.

I love Sozai. My wife and I went there shortly after they opened. We put ourselves in Mari’s capable hands for recommendations of what to eat. Gil the host, was very happy to pair each of the dishes with an excelent assortment of Sake’s. In fact, this was the first time my wife tried an unfiltered Sake, and now she’s a convert.

We will be visiting this restaurant frequently.
