A-1 Bistro in West LA: The Nook

My sister Jill and brother-in-law Jonathan discovered this fantastic, year-old bistro in West Los Angeles. Called Nook, it’s a great little place that seats about 50 folks.

We were served bowls of boiled peanuts for appetizers. Owner Brian said, “If you don’t like them, it lowers your expectations for the entrees.” These hot, soggy peanuts were actually pretty good, especially with a beer.

The food and service were superb. We inhaled the Cornershop Caesar with their famous whole grain mustard dressing, hearts of romaine and homemade crostini. This was followed by Stout Braised Short Ribs with garlic smashed potatoes, red onions and bacon… delectable.

My wife cleaned her plate of the Oregon Tilapia served crispy with roasted beets, haricorts verts, fennel, Nicoise olives and soy-orange emulsion.

And Jonathan devoured New Zealand green lip mussel pan roast with linguisa sausage, oven-drived tomato, garlic, herbs and white wine saffron broth, followed by the Sauteed Brown Rice Bowl with oven dried tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, carroits and tofu, covered with a poached egg.

Nook is open from 11:30am to 3pm for lunch and 5 to 10pm Monday – Friday, and 5 to 10pm Saturday.
