Haute Japanese Cuisine and Elegant Decor: Zuma, London

As a lover of modern Japanese cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised when my date took me out to lunch at Zuma — a Tokyo-style restaurant in London’s fashionable Knightsbridge district.

To start our meal, we shared appetizers of steamed edamame, sesame spinach, and seaweed salad. Then followed small courses of the house salad, fried soft shell crab, sea bass sashimi, and seared tuna steak complete with a refreshing bottle of Pouilly Fumé Sauvignon Blanc.

The highlight of the meal would definitely be the sea bass (called suzuki no osashimi); delicate slices of fish douched with yuzu (East Asian citrus fruit) and truffle oil with a garnish of salmon roe — it was quite delicious.

What is most striking about Zuma aside from the excellent cuisine is the beautiful décor: elegant, understated, but rich. Warm blonde wood contrasted with stark granite and sleek glass fill the room. A comparable London venue that comes to mind is Nobu. But Zuma certainly gives Nobu a run for its money.
