Sweet New Ride: Hershey Park, PA

Hershey Park is going to draw more than the usual sugar-high thrill-seekers this coming Memorial Day weekend with the launch of the new $5.4 million Reese’s Xtreme Cup Challenge Ride.

It’s a multi-sensory laser dark ride that’s suited to the whole family. One car, dubbed team peanut butter, is pitted against another car, dubbed team chocolate. The winning team is the one that laser blasts the most targets — strategically placed on animated characters competing in extreme sports events like skateboarding, drag racing, ice hockey, in-line skating, skydiving, surfing and snowboarding.

To warm up players before they even get to the park, the 99-year-old amusement hotspot has set up a link on its Web site that gives the back story on characters like Dylan “Dude” Dussinger and Zach “Air Dog” Callahan, plus a chance to win prizes in an online competition.

There won’t be any sore losers, no matter how lousy your blasting skill. After the ride, when the winning team is declared, everybody gets a Reese’s treat. In a preview, I was lucky enough to nosh on the new Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup with caramel. Now that’s sweet!
