I’m Innocent I Tell You, INNOCENT! :: Hotel Katajanokka, Helsinki

Helsinki’s historic Katajanokka prison will open as Best Western’s first premier-rated hotel in Finland on 1 June 2007.

This prominent building, which dates from the 1830s, is located in the historic Katajanokka district of Helsinki. It is known for its significance in the Finnish history of imprisonment. The prison design was based on the principle of the “separate system” of imprisonment, and was functioning as a prison until 2002.

The unique Hotel Katajanokka is surrounded by a beautiful park, with 106 ultra modern rooms as well as a prison-themed restaurant seating 200, a summer-terrace eatery, and a “Festival Hall’ conference room, which was formerly the prison chapel. It will also host concerts and summer festivals, which you can attend if you have time off for “good behavior.”

Comments Finnish Tourist Board director Anne Lind: “In a city where seldom a week goes by without the launch of a new restaurant, bar hotel or other hospitality venue, this is a truly unique event. The hotel is a prominent historical building in Finland, parts of which date back to the 1830s. The Hotel is sure to appeal to anyone with a sense of the unusual, as well to those who appreciate the high standards associated with Best Western’s Premier brand.?
