Turning Chocolate into Cash-Filled Condos: Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco

One of my favorite San Francisco landmarks is Ghirardelli Square near Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s not as touristy as its neighbor. It’s got a gorgeous view of SF Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the Marin County hills. And it’s home to the world-famous Ghirardelli Chocolate & Ice Cream Factory.

Now, the office building behind the soon to be converted to more upscale shops and restaurants is being converted into 54 high-priced timeshares –– going for $235,000 US for a two-bedroom apartment and $335,000 US for a three-bedroom apartment called Fairmont Heritage Place. These won’t just be apartments. They’ll actually be “luxury private residence club homes” with million dollar views.

For fun, travel highway 49 and stop by the original Ghirardelli chocolate factory.
