Tourists Not Allowed: The ESO Hotel, Cerro Paranal, Chile

Here’s a unique twist: Instead of welcoming tourists as virtually every other hotel on the planet, the new ESO (European Southern Observatory) Hotel will cater instead to researchers and scientists who travel there to work on a very large telescope and study the surrounding Adacama Desert, which is said to be one of Earth’s most hostile environments.

And instead of offering views of the surrounding land, most of this hotel is underground to shield it from the harsh sun, strong winds, considerable temperature drops, and frequent earthquakes. Remember to wear your sunscreen!
