Home Team Favorite For Breakfast: Home Plate, San Francisco

The perfect itinerary for a cold, grey Sunday in San Francisco. I had the BEST day yesterday, (inspite of the nasty cold grey weather) and for the next few weeks, you can duplicate it-if so inclined. Here’s the game plan:

11:30 a.m. –– Fueled-up at my nabe brunch spot Home Plate in San Francisco’s Marina-hood. This no frills- totally uncool, medium-greasy spoon diner is owned by the sweetest couple imaginable, he’s the chef and she waits tables, and is happy to keep refilling your cup with their decidedly un-Starbucks like brew.

Your best bet is to order off the long list of blackboard “Specials” — which I swear has never changed in the 10 years since I’ve been going there. I almost always end up ordering the three-egg scrambler: with their own healthy chicken sausage, green onions, spinach, and covered with a layer of melted white cheddar cheese. (I always ask for egg-whites only. No prob.)

While that’s scrambling, they bring you a basket of freshly baked hot scones with homemade fruit preserve. PLUS your breakfast also comes with two potato-carrot pancakes topped with sour cream and chunky apple compote, and croissants (which actually taste more like those tubes of crescent rolls). Other good breakfast choices include: fritatta’s, bagels and lox, cheese blintzes, corn beef hash, eggs benedicts, orange-cinnamon battered french toast, oatmeal waffles, etc.
