A Tale of Two Slices :: The Upper Crust & Pizzeria Regina, Boston
One is the new kid on the pizza block. The other is a world famous pizzeria with over 80 years of family history.
The Upper Crust was launched in 2001 by four local Bostonians with the idea of Neapolitan-style pizza (thin crust, chunky sauce), while Pizzeria Regina has been a tradition in the North End since 1926.
We ate at both on our eating tour of Boston last week and both were terrific. My wife and daughter preferred the porcini mushroom, tomato sauce, basil and cheese slices at The Upper Crust on Beacon Hill’s historic Charles Street location that only seats about 20 folks. They now have four other eat-in or take-out shops. I preferred the Puttanesca that featured plump artichoke hearts and sliced black olives, dressed with Pecorino Romano, Mozzarella, then sprinkled with fresh basil and Regina’s garlic and oil sauce at their funky venue on Thatcher Street. There’s another nearby at Fanueil Hall and many others throughout Massachusetts, New Jersey, and down to Florida.
So if you’re a pie fan, try them both.
