A Shining Michelin Year-Round Star :: Murray Circle Restaurant, The Lodge At The Golden Gate, CA

Locally farmed, exquisitely prepared, seasonally fresh food served with attentive style in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Tasting menus from $65 – $85. An 80-page wine list featuring over 13,000 bottles and 2,000 labels from five continents from $7 to thousands. A new world-class environmentally sustainable resort — Cavallo Point, The Lodge At The Golden Gate — with breathtaking views of the bridge, SF Bay and The City built at a cost of $300 million.

A sparkling new complex offering a Healing Arts Center and Spa, Winter Adventures, and more as the only luxury hotel near the Golden Gate Bridge… Priceless.

One can’t just review the Murray Circle Restaurant at Cavallo Point when dining here because the entire complex is integrated into 68 wooden buildings formerly occupied by the barracks of historic Fort Baker. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, this setting offers priceless views, a complete resort, a rustic-looking lodge offering modern amenities, and a sereneness normally reserved for alpine or desert mountain retreats.

We chose Murray Circle because of its proximity to our home 10 miles to the north and the allure of the offerings of Joseph Humphrey, their Michelin one-star Executive Chef, who oversees all cuisine at Murray Circle, Farley Bar, Cavallo Point’s on-site cooking school, plus their banquet service for meetings, groups and special events.

My wife, our vegetarian daughter and I were pampered with friendly, efficient service during our two-hour dining experience. Each of us loved the choice of fresh daily-baked breads. We savored each morsel of our three-course dinners including salads, persimmons, sunchoke puree, gnocchi, broiled sirloin and bacon-wrapped swordfish.

By the way, I was surprised and pleased to see “f/v” mentioned on the menu, denoting the name of the fishing vessel and its port of origin (Half Moon Bay, et.al.) — you can’t get more sustainable than that!

I urge you to save room for dessert — each choice is amazingly prepared and exquisitely delicious. We shared a butterscotch souffle with a toffee brownie and vanilla ice cream, an upscale version of a s’more with homemade hot chocolate and marshmallow, and a Guinness Beer cake, complete with a foamy head.

We relaxed after a hectic week of high-pressure work and high school finals in our quiet corner of the gorgeously appointed holiday-themed restaurant that featured the building’s 1903 original tin-plated ceiling, draperied private rooms, and many windows facing the GG Bridge to the south.

Touring the property’s gallery, lobby, Mercantile shop, outside Fire Fits, Cooking School, meeting rooms, Healing Arts Center and Spa, Tea Bar, Fitness Suite and Institute of the Golden Gate, one gets the sense of a complete private sanctuary, natural luxury, a peaceful retreat to nurture oneself, an opportunity to return to nature, and the ultimate retreat for the discriminating traveler.
