True Island Getaway: Sunset Key, FL

Many people have enjoyed the unique, extremely fun and tropical atmosphere of Key West at Florida’s southernmost tip, but a select few opt to enjoy the luxury of Sunset Key –– a private island located 500 yards off of Key West’s mainland. There are approximately 27 acres to this residential community and meticulously maintained palm tress and fauna line the homes and guest cottages better than the set of Fantasy Island.

I drove to Key West from Miami and had the privilege of a weekend stay on Sunset Key and let me tell you, I looked for Tattoo around every turn! The place is divine.

Cars are not permitted on the island so each home comes with a garage space just big enough to fit your golf cart, which you use to get about. You know, to the spa… the restaurant for dinner, the tennis courts, etc.

The only way on and off the key is via launch service from the Key West Westin Marina to its very own dock. Once you are off the boat, you can catch a golf cart or bicycle through the narrow brick paved streets past white picket fences lit by classic storybook lanterns.

There truly is magic where the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet. It is warmed by fabulous sunsets and looked upon from Victorian balconies wrapped with bodacious fuchsia bougainvillea blooms. It was a pleasant surprise when I found that the ten minute boat ride off the coast of a favorite party spot led to a charming paradise where inspiration seems to dwell peacefully.

    Pam,

Thank you for the article. I have been to Key West many times and have seen the island but have never had the chance to visit. Sounds like it’s worth the trip.
