Top Notch, Bottom of Mexico: Palmilla Resort, San Jose Del Cabo

A few years ago, we pampered ourselves with a retreat to the world-class, Conde´Nast award-winning Palmilla Resort at the southern tip of Mexico, near the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.

Once a 1950s hot spot for celebs and presidents, this One and Only Resort has just undergone an $80 million renovation by owner and operator Butch Kerzner and now attracts folks like Tom Cruise and John Travolta. You can’t come here without tasting the Tortilla Soup. Even though it was 95 degrees, we ordered two bowls up every day.

Nearby, there’s an extremely challenging Jack Nicklaus Golf Course (if you find 8 balls in the desert, they’re mine). And the restaurant is now run by Chicago celebrity chef Charlie Trotter. Don’t miss the huge indoor/outdoor spa and fitness center, either.
