Steelhead Diner Is a Fresh, New Spot :: Seattle

My son was recently visiting from New York City and we were looking for a nice little restaurant after watching the Seattle Mariners play the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field one sunny afternoon.

One of Seattle’s finest concierges, James Mulvaney of the Washington Athletic Club (named Seattle Hotel Concierge of the Year), recommended the Steelhead Diner at the Pike Place Market.

Our requirements were simple: interesting menu, fresh ingredients and preferably an outdoor patio.

Steelhead has it all.

Owned by the husband and wife team of Kevin and Terresa Davis (he was formerly with Oceanaire Seafood Room in Seattle), it’s a casual restaurant with outdoor dining. We reserved one of the tables overlooking Post Alley.

Max and I shared two savory starters: Armandino’s Air Cured Beef Bresaola served with sweet nectarines, arugula and saba and the Jumbo Lump Dungeness Crab Cake.

The latter was by far the best crab cake I have ever eaten… big chunks of crab and very little filler.

I opted for the Brutus Salad for my entree, composed of hearts of romaine lettuce with whole citrus vinaigrette and roasted pine nut gremolata. Max had the Totten Inlet Mussels in Purgatory (from Olympia) with smoked sausage, roasted garlic, serrano chilies, tomatoes, basil and orange zest.

We enjoyed a refreshing Mary Hill Rose of Sangiovese and Bridgman Viognier with our light summer meals.

The restaurant is located right across the street from Sur La Table and a salmon toss from the market.
