Party at the Plaza :: New York City

A few years ago New York’s Plaza Hotel was sold to the Elad development group, who began, in April 2005, a renovation of the historic building back to its 1907 charm and status. They were hoping to get it all completed before the hotel’s 100th anniversary in September 2007, but we’ll have to wait until after the new year early 2008 because of construction delays and an unexpected cost increase of (a measly) $50 million.

The Plaza’s Grand Ballroom is a major part of the revamp of the entire building The ballroom is being restored to reflect the way it looked in 1929 when the architectural firm of Schultze & Weaver designed it to replace the smaller ballroom of 1907. The ballroom will have two elaborate chandeliers, a stage and balconies on the north and east sides. The room is a neoclassic confection in white and gold with six mural which have been cleaned and conserved. The ballroom opens for events in January 2008. Pricing varies depending on the catering options but rental alone for the Grand Ballroom, which seats 500, is in the $80,000 to $100,000 range.
