From Vienna to Napa: Gruner Veltliner Wine Grapes

This just in… Austria’s most important native grape and its own white variety –– Gruner Veltliner – is being harvested now in the Diamond Mountain District of Napa Valley.

This experiment is courtesy of Herr Rudy Von Strasser, noted winemaker and relative of the notable Eric de Rothschild,. He’s going to try to cultivate about four to five cases from this year’s harvest. Next year, he hopes to grow about 100 cases worth, or a full crop. [From SF Gate.com.]

What exciting news. I am a big fan of Gruner Veltliner, and it is always interesting to see what varietals do in new places.
