*Jacksonville Inn-The 1863 National Historic Landmark building is both a hotel and gourmet restaurant (which received a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for their wine list) and conveniently located right on the town’s main street. The opulent Victorian rooms come with welcome modern touches such as whirlpool tubs and laptop connections. However, I was thrilled to stay a block away in one of their luxurious Honeymoon Cottages. It simply oozed romance with a fireplace located at the foot of my king-sized canopied bed , an oversized whirlpool tub and a steam-room shower, and a wet bar to keep my champagne cold for sipping in my private garden patio.
I found out that George W. and the missus had stayed there numerous times– but luckily not in my cottage.
* TuTu’Tun Lodge– is simply gorgeous, yet marvelously understated. No wonder it was voted #1 Hotel in the U.S. and Canada by the readers of Travel & Leisure. No frou-frou here-just a majestic timber lodge perfectly situated on the Rogue River surrounded by nothing but serene woodlands and the river. And although I only was around to sample the scones (scrumptious) the food is supposed to be superb and such a deal. For only $57.50 you get a bountiful breakfast, hors d’oeuvres hour and dinner.
The Winchester-The contemporary rooms were so tastefully designed, (all 19 were completely different yet each was done in cool , sophisticated colors, rare in the world of B & B chintz and ruffles), that I asked at the front desk who the designer was, thinking maybe I could drag her to S.F. Innkeeper Michael Gibbs proudly told me that his wife had done all the decorating. Since he overseas the kitchen, which serves some incredible food, they are quite the dream team.
