It’s Springtime, when warm-weather thoughts turn to … next year’s ski season.

Vail Resorts (www.snow.com) came out of the gate first and fast in announcing its new Epic Season Pass, an unrestricted, unlimited, two-state, five-mountain season pass for $579.

Reaction through the snow sports industry and among snow fans indicates that the Epic Pass is an epic deal. Vail’s season passes for 07-08 were selling for around $400 in the fall and came with a host of restrictions. The Epic Pass gives holders unlimited days at Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breckenridge resorts in Colorado as well as Heavenly Valley in California in the 08-09 season.

The pass is aimed mainly at destination visitors, those who plan a week or two vacation in the mountains. Even if the pass is used only 10 days during two weeks of vacation, it translates into less than $58 per day – prices that haven’t been seen since 2001 or 2002. Use it more and the per-day price keeps dropping.

Or, if you’re in California, use it just at Heavenly. At $579, it’s a screaming deal compared to the $1,300-$1,700 season pass price at nearby Squaw Valley last year.

The Epic Pass is unrestricted – no blackout dates or limits on how many times you can use it at each resort. It’s available for purchase only online at www.epicpass.com, is non-transferable and non-refunable. The Epic Pass will remain on sale through Nov. 15, but prices are always subject to change. A child’s Epic Pass can be purchased for $279.
