Big Waves, Huge Danger: 2006 Mavericks Surf Contest

A few miles south of my San Francisco childhood home is the sleepy town of Half Moon Bay. Twice a year, this hamlet becomes a mecca for thousands of people.

Once is during the month of October as families flock to the Great Pumpkin Festival; the other is annual Mavericks Surf Contest where, on just 24 hours notice each winter, 24 of the world’s best and most fearless people compete in what Sports Illustrated calls the “Super Bowl of Big-Wave Surfing.” And CNN designates it as the “most dangerous surf contest in the world”. The contest could happen any day between now as huge waves from the Pacific pound the coast. So stay tuned.
