Artificial Reef Brief: Pensacola, FL

I once did a scuba dive off the shores of eastern Florida, to see a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud that had been sunk with much Palm Beach panache to become an artificial reef. But it looked like any other rusted car and could have just as well been a Chevy or a Ford.

Now, the retired aircraft carrier USS Oriskany has been sunk as an artificial reef for divers about 24 miles off the coast of Pensacola. Built at the New York Naval Shipyard in 1945, the ship saw service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
