A Home Run For Burgers And Architecture :: McCovey’s, Walnut Creek, CA

As a SF Giants fan, I’ve always loved to watch Willie McCovey hit homers and stretch to catch throws to first base. (That’s how he earned his nickname, “Stretch.”) Long retired, he’s now a partner in McCovey’s, a restaurant named after him in Walnut Creek, which is a subway ride from the new Giants ballpark about 25 miles away San Francisco.

The restaurant has an incredibly authentic design to mirror SBC Park by the bay, a memorabilia collection of Hall of Famers that would rival Cooperstown, and a hearty menu of burgers, hot dogs, pizzas, salads, soups, starters, even big sandwiches.

I opted for a regular cheeseburger because I didn’t think my guest and I could make it around the bases with the Grand Slam Burger, a double-decker home run of a burger that weighed in at 44 ounces (Willie Mac’s jersey number).
