Decidedly Delicious Goat’s Cheese, No Kidding :: Cowgirl Creamery Artisan Cheese Shop, San Francisco

Goat’s Cheese is a delicacy in some parts of the world. In Washington, D.C., as well as Point Reyes Station and nearby San Francisco, California, it’s as common as Cheddar, Gouda, Gorgonzola or Swiss at your local deli.

At Cowgirl Creamery Artisan Cheese Shop, they farm goat cheese, from frisky Alpines, long-earned Nublans, earless LaManchas, Swiss Sannans and Toggenburgs, as well as well as red Oberhaslis. The give milk in the spring after bearing kids, and that first goat milk each season is the year’s sweetest and richest. It is that milk that yields fresh goat cheese that is soft and so perfectly delicious on fresh bread or crackers.

My friend Muriel and I stopped by their store at The Ferry Building in San Francisco on Tuesday and tasted about six of their cheeses. Some were so rich, they were almost like an ice cream for dessert. Stop by for their Spring and Summer Collections:

• Cowgirl Collection ($58) of 3 Spring Cheeses made with organic cow milk — a firm, buttery triple-cream, a mellow whole milk cheese, and a full-flavored washed-rind triple cream.

• The Spring Collection ($52) of spring flavors with their seasonal whole milk cheeses, including their seasonal whole milk cheese, mellow flavor and wrapped in stinging nettles; their fresh Chevre disc with fennel pollen and lavender, a Chevre disc rolled n herbs, and a Gouda-stye from Ireland iwth a smooth, caramel flavor.

• The Perfect Picnic ($95) with everything you need, including their buttery triple-cream, a semi-hard tomme in the style of a Swiss mountain cheese, a firm aged sheep milk cheese, a garlic-scented salume, Cowgirl Creamery Organic Wheat Crackers, and Ditty’s Irish Oat Cakes from County Cork.
