Baja Spa: Rancho La Puerta, Tecate, Mexico

A good friend of mine has been taking an annual trek to Rancho La Puerta, a world-famous spa and retreat that’s about an hour south of San Diego and 30 miles inland from the Pacific.

She says there’s no place like it anywhere on Earth. She says they have dozens of classes during the day — from yoga to pilates. She says it’s a great place to hike in the hills, especially early in the morning before the desert air heats up too hot — and she’s not normally a morning person. And she says the fresh-picked, natural food is so fantastic that it spawned the term “Spa Cuisine.” Must be why she there goes year after year and why it’s become a global phenomenon since 1940.
